The irony was that PSG, the team who have spent over £700 million to assemble a team of superstars in order to win the Champions League, were beaten by a goal scored by one of their ex academy players, Kingsley Coman. Bayern Munich won the trophyfor a sixth time while PSG still wait to win the competition.And most observers of the elongated, much altered tournament would judge that the best team won. Bayern after all won every game they played in the competition, including an 8-2 thrashing of Barcelona in the quarter finals.
The final was never going to be so one sided and a combination of brilliant goalkeeping by Manuel Neuer and wayward finishing from Neymar and Mbappe kept the Munich goal intact. Meanwhile Lewandowski swivelled and dragged a shot against the post with Navas floundering and Bayern built pressure moving into the second half. The winning beautifully created and executed. Joshua Kimmich delivering a flighted ball to the far post where Coman had ghosted in unseen to headthe ball back across Navas into the net.
The Bayern victory may well herald another period of German dominance in both club and international competitions. Unlike the French, Spanish and Italian leagues which rely heavily on South American imports, the Bundesliga favours home grown players. What about England I hear you ask?Indeed
