Quizzing coming home

QUIZZING’S COMING HOME

So excited about the week’s sports news, I’m slipping in a bonus update, despite it being the middle ish of the Euros, of Wimbledon and of the Tour.

Of course, Quiz HQ started in its usual grumpy mood.

Infuriated that the government had given in to UEFA blackmail and allowed 3000 of its gravy train dignitaries into Britain without quarantine.

Baffled that two England players could not play for a week after chatting to a Scottish club mate after the match. His own Scottish teammates had apparently kept social distance throughout their extensive training sessions.

17)England’s progress to the top of their with SEVEN points had been untroubled(apart from tartan hordes snapping at their heels)but infinitely tedious, eleven bank clerks totting up percentages.

Across Europe, several teams played games at breakneck speed and scary intensity. Clean sheets maybe, but only two goals; surely the odds on eventual English victory lengthened.

Well, that’s all changed in the last week; Quiz HQ has put up the flags and bunting and Nigel Anderton has promised to write about this upturn in English fortunes, with perhaps even more momentous times ahead.

15)At Wimbledon, Quiz HQ was happy enough about the British men. Evans and Norrie matched their seeding; Andy’s hip survived to the third round. Gloom started early with the Brish women when No ! Jo Konta dropped out as a Covid contact. One down, eight to go.By Tuesday evening, only one victory and only one hope left, an 18 year old schoolgirl, Emma Raducanu, who had never played a match on the main tour. Emma won, making TWO British women in the second round, but this was not enough for Emma. By Saturday, she had won two more matches and her main concern seemed unexpected laundry bills. Whisper it, Emma looks the real deal, even if she goes out tomorrow.

Add in two Cav sprint wins and Quiz HQ is on a most unusual high, thrilled that Cav has come back from the depths of despair. We are also delighted that Britain with a Brexit government that encourages xenophobia has given such a welcome to a woman of mixed Romanian/Chinese heritage. Proud too of a football team of unprecedented ethnic diversity, committed to a civilized public discourse, still taking the knee despite the boos of a minority.

On a domestic, Quiz HQ notes that the last contenders are off the mark, always a happy day, leaving Webmaster in the bottom three, Quiz Master in 244th.How are the mighty fallen! In an impressive lead is Glyn James, who has never missed a quiz since its start in 1998.And Jordan Henderson thought he’d been waiting a long time to score.
